Description from the seller

Surf and Sea – Farewell Gift of the Navy Communications School to a Chief Boatswain, 1976
Oil on canvas, signed and dated “Sommerfeldt 19.V.76”, with brass plaque of the Federal Navy and dedication sheet verso

WORK
Rough seas: waves in black-blue, gray and white roll in from the left, the surf breaks in the center in white spray, above a dark cloudy sky with a bright break. Textured with a spatula, the layers of color stand up high – a seascape from the 1970s whose charm lies in its movement.
The painting has a history: it was the farewell gift from the 4th inspection of the Navy Communications School, Training Group GA Eckernförde, to a Chief Boatswain at the end of his twenty-year service with the Federal Navy (1956–1976). On the frame sits the brass plaque: “In memory of service with the Federal Navy from 1956 to 1976 – Navy Communications School, Training Group GA Eckernförde – Regular Staff 4th Inspection.” On the back, the handwritten dedication sheet with the service seal of the Navy Communications School, Training Group GA, the signature of the Lieutenant-Commander and inspection chief, and about twenty signatures of the regular staff. A piece of Federal Navy history from Eckernförde, as complete as it is rarely found.

Technique: Oil on canvas, on stretcher
Image dimensions: 60.0 x 80.2 cm
Frame dimensions: 72.8 x 92.5 cm
Framed weight: approx. 3.8 kg
Signature: upper left in light blue “Sommerfeldt 19.V.76”. Verso: dedication sheet with service seal and signatures (see photos), attached to the canvas.

CONDITION
Good condition. Paint layer closed, the thickly laid sections intact, no cracks or defects visible. Surface with a few light specks of dust, not cleaned, not restored. Dedication sheet with foxing on the edge. Plaque with patina.

FRAME AND HANGING
Dark box frame with a shadow gap and a silver inner trim, contemporary, one corner bumped; the brass plaque is mounted on the lower frame rail. The frame is part of the lot. No glazing.
Hanging: wire between two eyelets on the stretcher. Please check before hanging and renew if necessary.

SHIPPING
Framed shipping, corners, plaque and surface protected. Pickup in Helmstedt possible.

Frame: dark box frame (shadow gap) with silver inner trim, contemporary; brass plaque mounted on the left side of the frame.
