Meiji period, original granite stone okigata-dôrô cape lantern Misaki-dôrô, standing 49.5 cm high with a 35.5 cm roof diameter and 35.5 cm depth, in excellent condition and originating from Japan.
Description from the seller
A four-part granite okigata-dôrô 置燈籠 (legless lantern) of the Misaki-dôrô 岬燈籠 (cape lantern) type. The stone combines shades of white, grey and black with an appealing outdoor patina.
Designed to stand without a separate pedestal, Misaki-dôrô were traditionally placed on rocks or small promontories at the edge of a pond, where their light could be seen from the water. This lantern begins with a rounded chûdai 中台 (central platform), which also serves as its base. Above it sits the circular hibukuro 火袋 (fire chamber), with square openings for the light source and a crescent-shaped opening representing the moon, opposite to a circular one for the sun. A broad, domed kasa 笠 (roof) shelters the chamber, while a lotus-bud-shaped hôju 宝珠 (finial) crowns the lantern.
Period: Japan – probably Meiji period (1868–1912).
Dimensions: Approximately 49.5 cm high in total; roof diameter 35.5 cm.
The granite has softened contours and surface weathering consistent with many years outdoors. In very good original condition, with a small chip to one corner of a square opening. Please refer to the photograph for a clear impression of the condition.
The lantern will be securely packed and shipped on a wooden pallet. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
