AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

About the work:
In 2011 Museum De Lakenhal and Leiden University jointly commissioned Erwin Olaf to create a contemporary history piece on the Siege and Relief of Leiden (1574). The result was a monumental tableau staged in Leiden's Pieterskerk, accompanied by six figure portraits and two still lifes. Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and war, appears in the series as the symbol of Leiden University, which William of Orange founded in 1575 as a reward for the city's resistance. The series is held in the collections of Museum De Lakenhal and Leiden University Libraries.

About the artist:
Erwin Olaf (born Erwin Olaf Springveld, Hilversum 1959 – 2023) was one of the most internationally acclaimed Dutch photographers. He was known for meticulously staged, cinematic images that join a painterly, Old Master-like light with sharp commentary on social taboos, isolation and power. In 2011 he received the Johannes Vermeer Prize, the Dutch state prize for the arts. That same year he made the official portraits of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. His work is in the collections of the Rijksmuseum, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag and many international museums.
