Ernst van Leyden's 1959 original oil painting Composition en Rouge, an abstract work signed in the lower left and sold with its frame, measuring 165 × 101 cm (frame) or 153 × 90 cm (canvas) with the 1950s edition and Galerie provenance.
Description from the seller
This large-format abstract oil painting by Ernst van Leyden (1892–1969) is signed and dated bottom left, Leyden 59. The composition is dominated by a deep red-orange field, in which angular and curved shapes in black, brown, bluish gray, pink, and white are layered over one another. Small accents in bright yellow and chartreuse punctuate the warm palette. Wide brushstrokes, translucent overpaintings, and sharply bounded color fields alternate, creating a layered and dynamic image structure.
On the back are, among other things, the inscriptions Ernst van Leyden, September 1959, Venezia, and Composition en rouge. Work dimensions: 153 × 90 cm. Including frame: 165 × 101 cm. The frame shows some damage.
