Description from the seller
This paper work by Kees van Bohemen (1928–1985) dates from 1983 and is signed lower right and dated. The composition is built around an interplay of abstract and suggestively figurative forms against a predominantly brown-beige background.
On the left dominates a dark, organic form, enclosed by curved contours and loose lines. On the right a more architectural structure of rectangular planes and diagonals emerges. White and black areas are alternated with subtle accents in pink, blue, yellow, and orange. The combination of bold contours, transparent color fields, and swift, dynamic lines gives the composition a pronounced dynamism and spatial layering.
Executed in mixed media on paper. Dimensions of the work: 70 × 99 cm. Including frame: 91 × 120 × 3 cm.
Biografie kunstenaar
Kees van Bohemen (Den Haag, 1928–1985) studied from 1943 to 1948 at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag. After his studies he spent a long period in Paris. In the late fifties he joined the Nederlandse Informele Groep, in the circle of, among others, Armando, Jan Schoonhoven, Jan Henderikse and Henk Peeters. His initially strongly abstract oeuvre subsequently developed into an expressive visual language in which figurative and abstract elements combine. Van Bohemen received the Talensprijs in 1963 and the Jacob Marisprijs in 1964. Travels and residencies in, among others, the United States and Africa provided new subjects for his painting. His work is in the collections of, among others, Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
