Condition: Very good condition. Beards preserved. Slight handling marks in the margins.
Printed and published by Edition Lanz, Basel. Edition of 77 numbered copies, plus a few H.C. and E.A. proofs.
Meanders is Tobey’s final work: nine original serigraphs “in the ancient Chinese manner,” designed and approved by the artist with Edition Lanz in Basel. Tobey died on 24 April 1976, before he could sign the print; the portfolio appeared posthumously in the same year, each impression bearing the artist’s stamp in place of a signature and being signed on the verso by Mark Ritter for the estate. The portfolio justification page specifies this and describes the accompanying texts: four pages of Tobey’s statements, an original poem by the artist, and two pages by Ritter on the genesis of the work. An original print validated by the artist, and not a reproduction.
Reference: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, inv. 1096.1979.1-9 (complete portfolio).
