Description from the seller
We present the Marlen La Pietà Collection
La Pietà is considered one of Michelangelo's masterpieces thanks to the dynamism and the softness of the lines, the plastic rendering of the bodily forms and the folds of the fabrics. The sculptural group represents the Madonna holding on her knees the son just taken down from the cross. The Madonna supports the son, while turning her gaze downward, with the right hand under the son's arm. In Jesus' hands the holes of the cross are perfectly visible. The work does not depict the Madonna's pain or the torment of Christ's tormented body: rather both, life and death, united, together reach divine perfection. This explains the pyramidal structure which, from the base width rising in a spiral, leads to the apex, then to unity, in the Virgin's head. Michelangelo's point of view is always, and only, frontal. The abundant folds of the mantle emphasize the refinement of the nude body. This broad drapery of the Madonna contrasts with Jesus' smooth body. The perfection of this piece and the serene face of the Virgin express the overcoming of earthly features and the attainment of ideal beauty. The extreme youth of the mother, in contrast to her son, was chosen by Michelangelo precisely to best render her chastity. In the Pietà there is no hedonism but rather the deeper sense of Neoplatonism and Florentine classicism: the idea is fully expressed, the forms are therefore totally finite. The extreme smoothness of the marble surface gives a remarkably mimetic effect, compared by Vasari to a miracle.
The hood is made of precious Italian gray variegated resin. One of the curiosities of this work is that it is the only one to bear the Master's signature on the strap that holds the Virgin's mantle. This peculiarity has been echoed and carved onto the large silver band, further enriched with the birth and death dates of the artist. On the little head rests a resin disk displaying the Marlen logo. The chisel-shaped clip is in 925 silver containing a bronze disk in which the designers at Marlen have aimed to synthesize the perfect fusion between formal beauty and theological truth, inherent to the work. The body consists of a band in 925 silver on which the masterpiece is relief-engraved, perhaps Michelangelo's highest achievement and known as the Pietà of Saint Peter or the Vatican Pietà, but to everyone, “Michelangelo's Pietà.”
