Lucebert (1924-1994) - Winged angel

Lucebert — "Winged Angel" (1986)

Original lithograph by Lucebert, made in 1986.

This expressive work reflects the raw, energetic visual language associated with the CoBrA movement and Naive Art. The traditional image of the angel is transformed here into a grotesque, totemic creature, endowed with exaggerated features and chaotic shapes evoking wings.

The composition is characterized by thick black outlines, nervous lines, dense hatching, and vigorous graphic gestures. The vivid colors overlay and spill beyond the contours, creating a dynamic texture that combines childlike spontaneity, dark humor, and primitive energy.

Through this figure that is at once tragically comic and mythical, Lucebert reinterprets the angel as a reflection of the human psyche.
