Charatan’s Make 3148X – Large Rusticated Sitter – Fully Restored English Estate Pipe

Description

A magnificent and impressively large Charatan’s Make 3148X, made in London, England and most likely dating from the Lane era, circa the 1960s–1970s.

This substantial English estate pipe features a tall, generously proportioned bowl, deeply carved rustication and an elegant long tapered vulcanite stem. Its flattened underside allows the pipe to stand securely without a pipe rest, making it a practical and visually distinctive sitter.

The pipe has undergone a complete professional restoration. The chamber, mortise and internal airways were thoroughly cleaned and sanitised, while the bowl was carefully reamed back to a safe and even carbon layer. The rusticated rim was cleaned with due respect for its original character.

The briar was refinished with a rich contrast stain: deep chocolate-brown tones in the recesses are complemented by warm reddish and amber highlights across the raised rustication. This treatment gives the large bowl considerably more depth and definition without obscuring its rugged texture.

The original vulcanite stem was carefully restored and polished to a deep gloss. It fits securely and shows no significant tooth damage. The original CP stem logo remains only very faintly visible, having largely disappeared through age and extensive use before restoration.

The nomenclature remains clearly legible:

CHARATAN’S MAKE
LONDON ENGLAND
3148X

The chamber appears clean and sound, and the draught is open. The pipe is ready to be enjoyed.

With its imposing dimensions, long graceful stem, distinctive sitter construction and richly contrasting rustication, this is a particularly charismatic example of traditional English pipe making—equally attractive as a collector’s piece or as a substantial everyday smoking pipe.

Dimensions:
*length 14,5 cm.
*tobacco chamber 24x32 mm.
(All sizes approximately)

This item will be carefully packed and shipped with full insurance.
