Description from the seller
Ancient fir table from the 15th century (1450/1470)
“Angelo entro ornato floreale”
Ancient authentic 16th-century board
- not restored, original pigments
- Period: 1450/1470
- Egg tempera on panel
- Interesting ceiling decorative panel from the 15th century, depicting an Angel within a floral ornament.
*** exceptionally offered without reserve price
Ancient painted panel characterized at the center by the presence of an angel, whose face emerges from the heavily time-marked surface. The figure is accompanied by stylized ornamental and vegetal elements, with floral motifs arranged on the sides, within a composition dominated by ochre, brownish red, dark green and earth tones.
The painting shows a largely worn layer, through which the wood support fibers emerge in several places. The widespread abrasions, gaps and color alteration today render some iconographic elements only partially legible, imparting the panel with a pronounced antique patina.
Condition report: painting surface heavily worn, with widespread abrasions and pigment losses, scratches, cracks and irregularities of the support; edges worn with small losses. Evident patina and natural superficial alteration due to age. Never restored
For type, format and decorative character, the panel can be traced to the tradition of painted panels intended for the decoration of wooden ceilings, particularly widespread in northern Italy between the 15th and early 16th centuries. The profane and courtly subject, together with the depiction of dress and profile presentation, suggests a placement in the second half of the 15th century, though leaving a more precise geographic attribution to a possible direct examination.
The work preserves a particularly strong charm precisely for its ancient state, with evident wear, losses and abrasions of the painting material, cracks and irregularities of the wooden support, as well as widespread traces of natural aging.
For execution quality, iconographic interest and documentary value, this panel represents a significant testimony of 15th-century Italian painting, of particular interest to collectors, scholars and museum institutions.
*** Conservation status: The panel shows the natural signs of time, with superficial wear, cracks in the wooden support, abrasions and slight flaking of the paint layer, along with other imperfections consistent with the era of creation and with its long conservation history. These characteristics should be considered coherent with a 15th-century work and attest to its antiquity and historical authenticity.
