Paul Debast, Archipel, original abstract acrylic painting from the 1980–1990 period, signed by hand, 39 × 30 cm, France.
Description from the seller
Very beautiful original abstract painting by Paul Debast, signed “P. DEBAST” in the bottom left.
A particularly luminous work, it is composed of a multitude of irregular shapes interlocking with each other, in a beautiful palette of colors: blue, yellow, red, green, orange, pink, ocher, brown, gray, white and black.
The painting is applied with a lot of material. The flat areas have a very pronounced relief, with the traces of the painting work still clearly visible, which gives the work a presence and a depth that are difficult for photographs to fully render. The surface also changes with the light.
The composition works almost like an abstract puzzle: each shape seems to click into the next, without a drawn contour, only by the confrontation of colors. Despite the great chromatic variety, the overall effect remains very balanced. It is a joyful and very graphic painting, which works especially well in a contemporary, vintage, or modernist interior.
Paul Debast, born in 1960, is a contemporary artist now referenced in the art market for his abstract compositions. Several of his paintings are notably presented by Galerie Montbaron in Madrid, specializing in modern and ancient art. In Debast’s cataloged works, one finds the same vocabulary of free geometric shapes, bold colors, and thickly applied paint.
The gallery describes, for example, his work as a kind of “intuitive geometry,” in which the colored planes organize themselves to constitute the very structure of the piece. This description fits the present painting particularly well: it is not a gestural abstraction, but a true construction by color, where each area seems to find its place in relation to the others.
