ITEM:
Complete Japanese Armor (Gusoku) — Edo Period
An exceptionally colourful and complete samurai armor (gusoku) of the Edo period, of striking visual presence, assembled with a vivid green-laced harmony accented in red, gold and blue — a parade-grade ensemble built for display and impact.
The cuirass (dō). The body is a multi-lame dō of russet/black-lacquered iron finished in a textured ishime ground and ruled with fine gold lines (kin-suji) between the lames. The upper chest is lacquered a deep vermilion red (aka-urushi) in a granulated finish, transitioning into the dark body plates and crowned with broad bands of green lacing (moegi-odoshi). At the centre sits a bold lacquered circular roundel, and a fringed green skirt descends below — all framed by gilt edging. A commanding, high-contrast front.
Helmet and face. The ensemble is topped by a tall, smooth-bowled black-lacquered kabuto of pointed (toppai/shiinomi) form, fronted by a large gold disc crest (maedate) evoking the sun, with small upturned crest-holders at the brow and a gold-laced flared neck-guard (shikoro) of multiple lames. A black-lacquered face mask (menpō) with red-lacquered interior and a laced throat-guard (yodarekake) completes the head defence, dramatically glossy against the matte plates.
Shoulders, arms and skirt. Broad laced sode (shoulder guards) and a laced gorget (nodowa) protect the neck and shoulders. The arms are defended by fine mail-and-plate sleeves (kote) worked over patterned cloth, set with gilt rosette bosses and small lacquered scales, finishing in lacquered hand-guards (tekkō). From the waist hang the kusazuri (laced lame tassets) and, beneath, stencilled-leather and lacquered thigh-guards (haidate) decorated with circular crests (mon) and stylised motifs, leading to laced shin-guards (suneate).
Lacing and decoration. Throughout, the armor is laced in close kebiki cord in a fresh yellow-green (moegi), picked out with orange and pale-green accents along the lower borders. The stencilled leather panels of the haidate, the gilt detailing and the vermilion ground give it a notably rich, festive palette — the kind of full-dress gusoku meant to be seen.
Period: Edo period
Type: Multi-lame lacquered-iron gusoku (russet/black with vermilion and moegi green lacing)
A samurai armor that will be the central focus of any room where it is placed and that will delight any fan of Japanese art. This exclusive piece is making it an incredible opportunity for any collector of Japanese, war or simply historical art to get their hands on a piece that will attract attention wherever it is displayed, from offices, to private homes, offices or restaurants and will give a regal look to any place. The armour has gilded details that show the quality of the piece. The incredible workmanship accentuates such ornate pieces as the kabuto, the mempo and the Do. The stand to assemble it and the box are included. This armour is sure to delight any collector of Asian art and will be the focal point of any visitor's home, shop or office. There is a very ancient object and there are damaged by time and tears. There is a possibility that parts may have been added later or that restoration occurred. Due to the delicacy of continuous assembly and disassembly, returns are not allowed on old armor.
