Bill Evans Trio’s Portrait in Jazz (Japan) is a 1976 Riverside pressing from Japan, catalogue SMJ-6144, with obi and insert, in Near Mint vinyl and VG+ sleeve, featuring both stereo and mono versions of Autumn Leaves.
Description from the seller
A lovely 1976 Japanese pressing of Bill Evans' masterpiece Portrait in Jazz, released by Riverside / Victor under catalogue number SMJ-6144. This copy comes complete with its original obi and Japanese insert, featuring beautifully preserved Near Mint vinyl.
Originally recorded on December 28, 1959, Portrait in Jazz introduced one of the most celebrated piano trios in jazz history: Bill Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums. Their extraordinary musical interaction fundamentally changed the traditional piano trio format, allowing the bass and drums to become equal voices in the music rather than simply accompanying the pianist. This democratic approach to ensemble playing represented a significant departure from conventional jazz trio practice and would influence generations of musicians to follow.
One particularly interesting feature of this 1976 Japanese edition is the inclusion of both stereo and mono versions of Autumn Leaves, offering two distinct performances of one of Evans' most celebrated interpretations. The programme also features Come Rain or Come Shine and Blue in Green—a selection that showcases the trio's lyrical sensitivity and harmonic sophistication.
This pressing is especially appealing with its original obi and insert still present. The obi remains remarkably clean and well preserved, while the record itself has survived in exceptional collectible condition. A very attractive complete copy of an essential jazz recording.
⸻
Sleeve (VG+):
A very nice and clean sleeve overall, with some yellowing on the back consistent with age. The front cover remains sharp and the obi is beautifully preserved, grading a strong VG+ example.
Vinyl (NM):
Beautiful Near Mint condition, exceptionally well preserved with minimal signs of play. The vinyl remains glossy and clean throughout, grading NM overall.
Insert / Obi:
Original Japanese insert and obi included; both in excellent condition.
