Description from the seller

Italian School of the 18th Century
Scope of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1683–1754)

"Study of a saint's head in contemplation"

Oil on canvas
Gilded wooden frame

Inscription «LK 1880» on the reverse
Measurements: 43 × 28 cm in the frame; 28 × 23 cm canvas

Description
The small painting depicts a half-length elderly male figure, nearly in profile, with the head raised. The gaze directed upward, the slightly parted mouth, and the tension in the face give the figure an intense expression of spiritual rapture and contemplation.

The long grey-blond beard is built with soft brushwork and progressively lighter highlights, while the face emerges from a green-brown background through a light concentrated on the forehead, the brow ridge, the nose, and the cheekbone. The dark garment, almost entirely absorbed in shadow, further enhances the lighting effect on the head.

The absence of specific attributes does not allow for a certain identification of the character. However, the bearded elderly appearance and the ecstatic pose allow us to interpret it as a head of an apostle or saint, probably conceived as an autonomous devotional image.

Attribution considerations

Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and his Venetian circle: Piazzetta developed a vast repertoire of heads with character, apostles, saints, and strongly foreshortened male figures, built through intense chiaroscuro and psychologically charged attitudes. There is also documentation of a series of Apostolic heads designed by Piazzetta and translated into copperplate engraving by Marco Pitteri in 1742.

The comparison becomes particularly interesting because Piazzetta studies of bearded men and figures with the head tilted or turned upward are documented. The Städel Museum, for example, houses a Head of a man looking upward, classified in Piazzetta’s circle, perhaps Giuseppe Angeli; the museum emphasizes the necessity of distinguishing the master’s hand from works produced in his circle.

The National Gallery of Art also preserves Piazzetta study of saints from the 1730s–1740s, in which the close-up cropping of the figure, the strong profile characterization, and the monumental setup of the head recur.

Condition Report

The work presents in a fair to good overall state of preservation, compatible with its age and past conservation events. The surface paint appears generally stable and retains good legibility of the subject. There are light abrasions, minor surface irregularities, and tiny losses or retouchings localized, more noticeable in the dark fields. The surface varnish appears slightly altered and uneven, with deposits and surface dirt; prior cleaning and retouching interventions are plausible. Reframed.

General conditions: signs of time and flaws consistent with the period of the work

With certificate of sale and legitimate provenance

Note regarding the frame:
The frame is provided free of charge as a courtesy, and therefore does not contribute to the economic value of the work. Given the nature, age, and particular delicacy of the frame, during transport small breaks, separations, abrasions, or material losses may occur. Any damage to the frame during shipping cannot be a basis for dispute, refund, or compensation, as the sale concerns only the painted work.
