The color woodcut sheet depicts Yang Xiang, a figure from the Chinese collection “Twenty-four Examples of Filial Piety.” The series illustrates traditional virtue stories, in which love and devotion to one’s parents are central. Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the most important Japanese ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century, combines the traditional narrative with his expressive visual language and a dynamic composition.
