Original Meiji period six-panel byōbu folding screen, 175 cm high by 377 cm wide, depicting a riverside village and daily-life scenes in ink and pigments on paper with bands of gold leaf, silk borders, and a lacquered wooden frame, signed at the upper left and suitable for wall mounting or as a room divider.
Description from the seller
A Japanese six-panel byōbu folding screen, painted in ink and pigments on paper, depicting a charming riverside landscape animated by scenes of daily life.
The composition unfolds among gracefully shaped trees, rocky outcrops, and traditional thatched-roof houses, where small groups of figures gather. On the right, the river opens onto a broad landscape dotted with boats and travellers along its banks.
The delicate ink washes, subtle colours, and generous open spaces evoking water and mist lend the scene a peaceful and poetic atmosphere.
Bands of applied gold leaf along the upper and lower sections lend a luminous and decorative quality to the composition.
Signed at the upper left.
The screen is finished with silk borders and a lacquered wooden frame.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
---The byobu is in good overall condition, with wear, holes, stains, and losses throughout the surface, particularly along the panel joints. Wear to the silk borders and lacquered frame. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
