Spoorbrug over de maas, a 1960–1970 oil painting by Toon Koster (Netherlands), original edition, hand-signed, sold with frame, framed size 42 x 52 cm (unframed 30 x 40 cm).
Description from the seller
This atmospheric painting features an imposing railway bridge that, with its dark, monumental construction, dominates the landscape. Beneath the large arch-shaped passage, two human figures are visible, emphasizing the impressive scale of the structure. The artist has used a restrained color palette with deep black, brown, and green tones, which strongly contrast with the warm ocher and yellow nuances of the overcast sky. The subtle light that falls through the opening beneath the bridge creates a distinctive sense of depth and guides the eye to the landscape beyond. The powerful, loose brushwork and the rich texture of the paint give the work a rugged and somewhat mysterious appearance. The railway bridge forms an impressive interplay of industrial architecture and natural surroundings, where the contrast between light and dark creates a hushed, almost melancholic atmosphere.
Anthonius Bernardus (Toon) Kelder (1894–1973) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and sculptor. Toon Kelder studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts. He was a pupil of Alexander van Maasdijk and Frederik Nachtweh. Until 1945 he painted nudes and still lifes in the traditional style of the Hague School. After 1948 he shifted drastically to abstract imagery and also began to sculpt. He drew many portraits. Kelder is regarded as part of the Nieuwe Haagse School and was a member of Pulchri Studio.
