Marcus de Vestele, Nu féminin - 1965, an oil painting on panel in a Cobra-inspired abstract style, 56 × 42 cm, 1965, original edition, signed, sold with frame, produced in Belgium, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024)
“Nu”, circa 1965
Oil on panel,
56 × 42 cm
Signature: On the back, workshop stamp “Marcus de Vestele / Atelier de l’artiste”
Simple wooden frame made by the artist
Condition: good overall. Rich surface and preserved texture; a few slight signs of aging without affecting the composition.
Provenance: artist Marcus de Vestele’s workshop.
Description
Abstract composition with organic, generous forms, read as a female nude. Two large circular masses, modeled in shades of gray, beige, and ochre, occupy the center and evoke a body stretched out or seated, with full, sensuous volumes.
On the right, ring-like shapes and dark lines suggest breasts or limbs, while splashes of red, blue, and green enliven the surface.
The material is thick, scratched and worked, with zones of transparency and superpositions that give a tactile depth. The gesture remains free, close to the Cobra spirit: crude figure, tension between body and abstraction, restrained color. A rare and intimate work, directly from the studio, blending sensuality and expressive roughness.
Biography
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a Belgian artist long recognized as a marble sculptor, notably in Carrara and in Bardiglio. At the same time, he pursued a lifelong pictorial production that spent a long time in the studio, today sought after.
Strongly influenced by Cobra (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant), he retains the crude figure, spontaneous line, and the tension between body and abstraction.
This panel is a rare example: direct painting, organic forms, presence held by the material more than by drawing.
