Description from the seller

Rarissima e preziosa scultura di Walter Valentini esemplare 1/7 pezzo unico cm 35 x 22 x 12 fusione in bronzo lucido e patinato con autentica dell' artista su fotografia

Walter Valentini (Pergola, 22 October 1928 – Milan, 20 May 2022) was an Italian painter, sculptor and printmaker, recognized at an international level.

In the works in which the reference to architecture is evident, there is the arched doorway of a stylized entrance inspired by the Palazzo Ducale of Urbino, homage to the Renaissance utopia of the “Ideal City” and to the City of the Sun theorized by Tommaso Campanella. These works are characterized by open geometries, broken arches and unfinished circles: traces of architectures that are rigorously planned but not completed, demonstrating that the “perfect city” is an aspirational ideal, an urban and philosophical project to which the artist can aspire, but which cannot be concretely realized. As the art historian Elena Pontiggia explains, “to the feeling of utopia corresponds in an equal and opposite way a feeling of impossibility, of limit.[11]” “If the circle has always evoked an idea of perfection, the arch could be understood as a perfection in part. The arches with which Valentini’s painting is interwoven, moreover, reinforce the sense of incompleteness, because they are often themselves interrupted or contradicted. In his works the arch breaks into fragments, expands into ellipses, repeats in space like an echo that, however, does not align with the original lines. Geometry, in short, seen up close reveals fractures, erosions, tears, heresies."
