He first studied music at the Juilliard School in New York (1944-1945), where he befriended Miles Davis and became a jazz saxophonist under the pseudonym Larry Rivers. His first solo exhibition took place in 1949. In the early 1950s he reintroduced figuration into American painting and then offered a very personal take on Pop Art, by distorting the codes of great paintings that have marked the history of art, such as Courbet's Burial at Ornans or Manet's Olympia.
