Biography
Jean Fautrier (1898–1964) ranks among the most important representatives of French Informel and among the renewers of modern painting in the 20th century. His works are characterized by an exceptionally pastel coloristic, relief-like surfaces, and a nearly sculptural materiality, with which he dissolved the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Through the sensitive use of delicate tones, dense color applications, and multi-layered structures, Fautrier developed a distinctive visual language that has profoundly influenced informel art.
