Original oil painting titled Herfstlandschap (1986) by Dutch artist Henk Bies (1928–2006), an expressionist landscape measuring 77 × 98 cm framed, signed, and sold with frame by Galerie as an original edition.
Description from the seller
This atmospheric landscape depicts a tranquil natural scene, in which the warm glow of a setting sun subtly illuminates the horizon. The artist has created a particularly atmospheric composition with a restrained palette of deep browns, ochers, greens and grays. The dark silhouettes of the trees, whose autumnal foliage glows in warm reddish-brown tones, stand gracefully against the cloudy evening sky. Especially the central grouping of trees forms a strong resting point within the composition, while the low horizon and the wide sky give the landscape a sense of space and depth. The loose, impasto brushwork and the subtle transitions between light and dark enhance the melancholic and almost mysterious appearance of the work. The painting exudes the atmosphere of traditional Dutch landscape art and bears witness to a special sensitivity for light, mood and the fleeting beauty of nature.

Henk Bies (1928–2006) was a Dutch painter, born in Aarle-Rixtel, who grew up in an artistic family. His father, the well-known Brabant landscape painter Marinus Bies, was his first teacher and introduced him to painting at a young age. Later he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and developed a completely individual artistic signature. His oeuvre includes paintings, watercolors and drawings, in which nature, the landscape and the workings of light and atmosphere play an important role. From the 1960s, his painting developed in an increasingly expressionistic and later also non-figurative direction, in which color, form and painterly expression gained significance. Bies lived and worked, among other places, in Aarle-Rixtel, Maastricht, Brussels and Helmond. In addition to his artistry, he played an active role in Brabant’s cultural life. He was involved in the founding of Meyhuis in Helmond and served as an advisor on art matters for the municipality. His work testifies to a strong connection with the painterly tradition of his family, but also to a continual search for a personal visual language.
