De zaaier is an original oil painting by Henk Bies (1928–2006), created in 1980 in the Netherlands in an expressionist style, signed, sold with frame, measuring 30 x 40 cm (43 x 53 cm including the frame).
Description from the seller
This powerful and expressive painting shows a sower at work in the field, surrounded by a lush, colorful landscape. The artist has depicted the human figure with broad, energetic brushstrokes and a bold color palette of deep black, ochre yellow, brown and vibrant green. The dark silhouette of the bent-over man forms an impressive contrast with the warm, golden background, giving the figure an almost monumental appearance. The impasto paint handling and the rough, dynamic brushwork reinforce the sense of movement and physical effort. Through the simplified forms and strong color contrasts the work takes on a distinctly expressionist character. The scene not only depicts traditional peasant life, but also evokes associations with the connection between man and nature, the fertility of the land and the ancient cycle of sowing and harvesting. The result is a particularly atmospheric and characterful painting in which human labor and the power of nature come together in an impressive way.

Henk Bies (1928–2006) was a Dutch painter, born in Aarle-Rixtel, who grew up in an artistic family. His father, the well-known Brabant landscape painter Marinus Bies, was his first mentor and introduced him to painting at a young age. Later he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and developed a completely distinctive artistic signature. His oeuvre comprises paintings, watercolors and drawings, in which nature, the landscape and the workings of light and atmosphere play an important role. From the sixties his painting developed into an increasingly expressionist and later also non-figurative direction, where color, form and painterly expression gained significance. Bies lived and worked among others in Aarle-Rixtel, Maastricht, Brussels and Helmond. In addition to his artistry he played an active role in Brabant’s cultural life. He was involved in the founding of Meyhuis in Helmond and acted as advisor on art matters for the municipality. His work testifies to a strong connection with the painting tradition of his family, but also to a continual search for a personal visual language.
