Artist biography
Eleonora Stol (1946–2022) was a Dutch visual artist, born in Leiden. She trained at the Vrije Academie in The Hague and spent a significant part of her artistic career based in Amsterdam.
Her oeuvre includes paintings and graphic works in which an expressive, colorful idiom is central. Stol combined figurative representations with abstract elements, strong contours, and a free, intuitive handling of color and form. Themes such as love, human relationships, dance and dream imagery recur in her work.
The designation ‘La Roja’, which she also used as an artist name, refers to her special connection with the color red. This color, alongside pronounced pink, yellow, green and blue tones, plays a recurring role in her compositions. Her work is characterized by a personal visual language in which painterly spontaneity, figuration and decorative elements come together.
