Landschap met ondergaande zon is an oil painting by Marinus Bies (1894–1975), a Dutch Expressionist landscape from 1940–1950, sold with frame, original edition, hand-signed, measuring 41 × 49 cm (frame included).
Description from the seller
This evocative and characterful painting depicts a tranquil village scene at sunset, where the dark silhouettes of a few houses and tall, almost bare trees stand out against a warmly brightening evening sky. The artist has, with a restrained palette of deep brown, green, and ochre tones, created a particularly intimate and melancholic atmosphere. The low sun, visible as a golden disk between the branches, forms a subtle yet powerful light point within the composition. The loose, impasto brushwork and the rich texture of the paint give the work a lively and expressive character, while the dark foreground and the warm glow on the horizon contribute to a strong sense of depth. In particular, the contrast between light and shadow lends the scene a nearly mysterious aura. The painting breathes the calm and simplicity of rural life and testifies to a special sensibility for mood, light, and the poetic beauty of the everyday landscape.
Executed in oil on panel
Dimensions of the work approximately 26 × 35 cm; with frame approximately 41 × 49 cm.
Provenance: private collection, F. de V., Eindhoven.
Biography of the artist
Marinus Bies (Aarle-Rixtel, 1894–1975), full name Martinus Johannes Bies, was a Dutch painter and draughtsman whose oeuvre is closely tied to the Brabant landscape, and in particular the Peel. He studied under Arnold Marc Gorter and Jan Kruysen and developed a powerful, freely painted pictorial language in which landscape, colour, and atmosphere are central. From 1933 he worked as a professional artist. In 1938 and 1939 Bies participated in group exhibitions; during this period the Van Abbemuseum acquired a Peel landscape by him. His work was subsequently exhibited in the Rijksmuseum as well. On the occasion of his hundredth birth anniversary, Museum Kempenland Eindhoven organized a retrospective of his oeuvre in 1994. In 2025 his fiftieth death anniversary in the Peel region was commemorated with a series of exhibitions focusing on his landscape art.
