Walter Valentini (Pergola, October 22, 1928 – Milan, May 20, 2022) was an Italian painter, sculptor and printmaker, internationally recognized in the field of graphics and engraving.
He was a master of techniques such as etching, aquatint, drypoint, multi-color lithography, and copperplate engraving. An artist of international standing, with solo shows from 1973 to the present: in Italy, from Messina, Milan, Rome, Naples, Bari, Bologna, Trieste, Bolzano, Padua, Mantua, to Cagliari, etc.; abroad in Krakow, Stockholm, Hamburg, New York, Luxembourg, Aspen (USA), Paris, Antwerp, Cologne, Monte Carlo, Istanbul, Ankara, Strasbourg, Washington, Chicago, Boston, Vancouver, Seoul, Ljubljana, Lisbon, Prague, Innsbruck, Hollola (Finland), Buenos Aires, Bucharest, Madrid, Copenhagen, San Francisco, Tokyo, Sakaide (Japan), Fredrikstad (Norway), Dusseldorf, Zurich, Oakland (USA), Barcelona, Basel, Ghent (Belgium), Zurich, Soest (Netherlands), to Moscow, etc.
He won numerous prizes and participated in many exhibitions: 1st Biennale of Contemporary Italian Engraving in Venice in 1955; International Biennales of Ibiza and Listowel; International Biennial of Krakow in 1984; International Biennial of Ljubljana in 1984 and 1989; “XLVII” Venice Biennale; Rome Quadriennale in 1999.
On direct commission he created large installations in Milan, Bologna, Reggio Emilia, Chiaravalle (Ancona), Pesaro, Siegburg (Germany), Connecticut and Aspen (USA).
He was part of the group that, in 2001, designed the church of Ca' Staccolo in Urbino.
An universe, Valentini’s, poetic, rhythmic, musical, a geometric and evocative symbolism that leads to a synthesis, almost metaphysical and surreal, a relationship between sign, structure and visual matter that tends toward a new constructive art rich in suggestive elements to the point of appearing as “states of mind.” Since the 1970s he deepened the connection between painting and engraving, along with a thorough shaping of space with temporal valences, time and space, interpreted and reinvented with mastery through lines, abrasions, cracked walls, architectures and magical, poetic geometries."
