Hooimijten, an oil painting on panel by Henk Bies (1928–2006), created in the 1980s–1990s, of Dutch origin, an expressionist landscape signed lower right, original edition, sold with frame, dimensions 43 x 51 cm including the frame.
Description from the seller
This impressive and expressive painting shows a wide, desolate landscape beneath a threatening, heavily clouded sky. The artist has managed to create a particularly dramatic and melancholic atmosphere with a powerful palette of deep browns, blacks, and gray-green tones. Three dark hayricks stand out against the lightening horizon, where subtle accents of bright yellow and fresh green give the landscape surprising liveliness. A winding sandy path draws the eye from the dark foreground toward the distance and enhances the spatial depth of the composition. The loose, impasto brushwork and energetic strokes give the work a distinctly expressionist character, where not so much the precise depiction of the landscape, but mainly the mood and the experience of nature are central. The strong contrast between the dark, turbulent cloudscape and the warm light accents on the horizon lends the painting an almost mystical appearance. The result is a powerful and atmospheric landscape in which the overwhelming beauty and unpredictability of nature are vividly conveyed.

Henk Bies (1928–2006) was a Dutch painter, born in Aarle-Rixtel, who grew up in an artistic family. His father, the well-known Brabant landscape painter Marinus Bies, was his first teacher and introduced him to painting at a young age. Later he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and developed a wholly distinctive artistic signature. His oeuvre includes paintings, watercolors, and drawings, in which nature, the landscape, and the effects of light and atmosphere play a significant role. From the sixties, his painting developed into an increasingly expressionistic, and later non-figurative, direction, in which color, form, and painterly expressiveness gained importance. Bies lived and worked among others in Aarle-Rixtel, Maastricht, Brussels, and Helmond. In addition to his artistry, he played an active role in Brabant’s cultural life. He was involved in establishing Meyhuis in Helmond and acted as an advisor on art matters for the municipality. His work bears witness to a strong connection with the painterly tradition of his family, but also to a continual search for a personal visual language.
