Valavond is an original oil painting by Dutch artist Henk Bies (1928–2006), created in 1982 in the 1980–1990 period, a landscape in the expressionist style, signed on the lower right, from the Netherlands, sold with a frame, measuring 38 x 45 cm including the frame.
Description from the seller
This atmospheric and restrained painting depicts a wide landscape at dusk, where the last rays of sun bathe the horizon in a warm, golden glow. The artist has created a particularly tranquil and melancholic atmosphere with a harmonious palette of deep browns, olive greens, and ochre tones. The dark, almost silhouette-like vegetation in the distance forms a beautiful contrast with the softly brightening sky, while the subtle color variations in the foreground give the landscape natural depth. Notably, the loose, pasty brushwork, with the visible texture of the paint and the smooth transitions between light and dark, lends the work a lively, almost impressionistic character. The low horizon and the imposing sky enhance the sense of space and infinity. The painting exudes serene calm and bears witness to a special sensitivity to light, mood, and the poetic beauty of the Dutch landscape.

Henk Bies (1928–2006) was a Dutch painter born in Aarle-Rixtel, who grew up in an artistic family. His father, the renowned Brabant landscape painter Marinus Bies, was his first teacher and introduced him to painting at a young age. Later he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and developed a completely distinctive artistic signature. His oeuvre includes paintings, watercolors, and drawings, in which nature, the landscape, and the operation of light and atmosphere play a significant role. From the 1960s his painting developed into an increasingly expressionistic and later non-figurative direction, where color, form, and painterly expression gained importance. Bies lived and worked in several places, including Aarle-Rixtel, Maastricht, Brussels, and Helmond. In addition to his artistry, he played an active role in Brabant’s cultural life. He was involved in the founding of Meyhuis in Helmond and served as an advisor on art matters for the municipality. His work testifies to a strong bond with the painterly tradition of his family, but also to a continuous search for a personal visual language.”} }} {
