Artist: Shiva Varzgar (1941 Tabriz, Persia/Iran – 2011 Vienna, Austria)
Title / Theme: Homage to the Rubaiyat (Quatrain) by Omar Khayyam
Dating: 1999 (hand-signed and dated bottom left, see last photo)
Technique: Original mixed media and micro-calligraphy (Ghubar) on paper with gold leaf applications. 100% hand-drawn unique piece.
Condition: Very good, professionally framed.
Description:
This exceptional work is a museum-like, contemporary original by the renowned Iranian-Austrian artist Shiva Varzgar from 1999.
The piece captivates with an extremely fine and time-consuming micro-calligraphy (Ghubar) in Persian language (Nasta’liq/Shekasteh script), which runs through the entire background like an ornamental carpet. Content-wise, the delicate script is devoted to the world-famous philosophical quatrains (Rubaiyat) of the Persian poet, astronomer and mathematician Omar Khayyam (1048–1131), which chant the pleasures of life and skepticism about transience.
In the foreground stand monumental, modern calligraphy motifs, combined with symbolic elements: a stylized crescent over suggested waves and an emblem flanked by birds in the lower center. The work is refined with noble gold edges and gold-leaf elements.
On the reverse side there is the original contemporary label explaining the literary reference of the work, which underscores the authenticity and documentary value of the collection piece. The image is handed over inclusive of the high-quality solid wood frame with matting and gold edge.
