Tiel, valavond is a 1979 oil painting by Henk Bies, an original expressionist landscape from the Netherlands, 46 × 59 cm including the frame and signed with the date 1979, sold with frame by Galerie.
Description from the seller
This atmospheric and expressive painting depicts a vast, tranquil landscape at sunset, in which a solitary tree stands out against an impressive, golden-yellow illuminated evening sky. The artist has created a particularly melancholic and poetic atmosphere with a rich and harmonious color palette of warm ocher, brown and yellow tones, interspersed with deep greens and subtle bluish-gray accents. The low horizon and the expansive clouds give the composition a monumental spatiality, while the solitary tree functions as a natural resting point. Notably, the bold, impasto brushwork, where the layered paint texture and the vibrant color touches lend the landscape an almost tangible quality. The warm glow on the horizon contrasts beautifully with the dark fields in the foreground, where subtle reflections and lighter areas add extra depth. The painting breathes the silence and wistfulness of rural life and forms a striking depiction of the transitory beauty of nature, with the interplay of light, color, and atmosphere central.

Henk Bies (1928–2006) was a Dutch painter, born in Aarle-Rixtel, who grew up in an artistic family. His father, the well-known Brabant landscape painter Marinus Bies, was his first mentor and introduced him to painting at a young age. Later he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and developed a completely individual artistic signature. His oeuvre includes paintings, watercolors, and drawings, in which nature, the landscape, and the workings of light and atmosphere occupy an important place. From the 1960s his painting evolved into an increasingly expressionistic and later also non-figurative direction, in which color, form, and painterly expression gained significance. Bies lived and worked in, among others, Aarle-Rixtel, Maastricht, Brussels, and Helmond. In addition to his artistry, he played an active role in Brabant’s cultural life. He was involved in the founding of Meyhuis in Helmond and acted as an advisor on art matters for the municipality. His work testifies to a strong connection with the painterly tradition of his family, but also to a continual search for a personal visual language.
