Description from the seller
Hand-carved meerschaum pipe in the shape of an oriental gentleman’s head or sultan with turban and beard.
Material: Genuine block Meerschaum (a soft white hydrous magnesium silicate that is excellent for carving and develops a honey-yellow to brown patina over time when smoked).
• Motif: Classic Orientalist representation of an Ottoman sultan or man with a turban, often crafted in the 19th or 20th century (or in traditional handicraft to this day).
• Origin: Traditionally, such pipes often come from Turkey (e.g., from the Eskişehir region, the main mining area for Meerschaum) or from European pipe manufactories.
• The strongly yellow, slightly marbled material is very typical for amber (often pressed real amber or "Ambroid") or an early high-quality plastic substitute like Bakelite or celluloid, used in antique pipes.
It could also be real amber, no guarantee!
• Patina on the Meerschaum: At the junction to the mouthpiece and in the fine recesses of the carving you can already see a slight discoloration. This shows that the pipe has either been smoked or has darkened over the decades due to aging of the material.
Length of the pipe: 14.5 cm
Height: about 6 cm
Width: about 4 cm
Very good overall condition.
Handmade.
