Winter landscape, a 1960–1970 oil painting by Hubertus Frissen from the Netherlands, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
This atmospheric winter landscape depicts a tranquil rural scene, where a few farmhouses and bare trees are surrounded by a thin layer of snow. The artist has created a particularly atmospheric whole with a loose, impressionistic brushwork and a rich palette of subdued green, gray, and brown tones. The dark, threatening clouds dominate the sky, while a subtle break of light on the horizon provides a beautiful contrast. The snowy path in the foreground guides the eye along the characteristic farmstead to the open countryside in the distance. The visible brushwork and the delicate interplay of light and shadow give the painting depth and vitality. The work exudes the calm and melancholy of a winter day and testifies to a keen sense for the beauty of the everyday landscape.

Hubertus Josephus Frissen, better known as Jos Frissen, was a Dutch painter, born in Houthem in South Limburg. He largely developed as a self-taught artist and became known for his impressionistic landscapes of Limburg and the Belgian Ardennes. His paintings are characterized by lively brushwork, a rich use of color, and a particular attention to light and atmosphere. Especially the picturesque Geuldal formed an important source of inspiration, which earned him the nickname ‘the painter of the Geul valley’. In 1950 he founded the Valkenburg Art Circle Henri Jonas. His œuvre forms an atmospheric tribute to the South Limburg landscape.
