Description from the seller

Panamarenko (1940-2019) - Flying Carpet
Offset print - Signed on the plate - 2008

Dimensions are those of the frame

The Gazet van Antwerpen edition (2008)

In 2008 the Belgian newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen released a special, limited reproduction of Panamarenko's design of the Flying Carpet.

The story behind the 'Flying Carpet' (Magic Carpet)

The original artwork dates from 1979. Panamarenko then designed a construction of balsa wood, mesh and electric motors with forty small propellers that, in theory (according to his own calculations), should really be able to take off.

The work was shown in 1979 at the Sydney Biennale and then disappeared for almost 45 years in a wooden crate in the depots of S.M.A.K. in Ghent. At the end of 2024 it was rediscovered and shown to the public again, after which in 2025 it also received a prominent place in the entrance hall of the KMSKA in Antwerp.
