AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Very beautiful Art Deco desk set from the Art Deco period, consisting of two Bohemian crystal inkstands, their Art Deco stand, and their blotter holder.
This set fits perfectly into the second period of Art Deco, characterized by rigorous geometrization, symmetry and tiered structures (often described as the "skyscraper" or ziggurat style).
The openwork back gallery with circular and vertical line motifs recalls the work of the Viennese Wiener Werkstätte workshops. The square brass frames that hold the inkstands and the elongated octagonal shape of the tray are the very essence of the modern, architectural aesthetics of the 1920s-1930s.
Period 1925 - 1930. It is the golden age of this type of luxury accessories for the working bourgeoisie.
Large local workshops based in Prague or in the industrial regions of Bohemia produced these high-quality metal objects, often exported throughout Europe. Although anonymous, this is a high-end atelier-made piece.
The two inkstands in heavy-cut crystal, perfectly cubical in shape with no visible chips, illustrate the legendary craftsmanship of Bohemian glassworks (such as Moser or Loetz), which supplied cabinetmakers and bronze founders for desk accessories.
The frame, the gallery and the hinged lids of the inkstands are in polished solid brass. The patina is beautiful, well preserved, showing a warm gilding typical of Central European productions.
Bakelite (or Galalith/Engraved glass): The glossy black plate forming the back of the tray is a formidable technical choice. If it is Bakelite (one of the first synthetic polymers invented in the early 20th century), it was at the time the pinnacle of industrial modernity. Its shine perfectly imitates Chinese lacquer or ebony, providing a striking contrast with the gold of the brass.
2 Bohemian crystal inkstands and brass lids
Very beautiful Art Deco brass stand, black opaline glass or Bakelite backing
1 matching blotter holder in brass, probably
Rare set, in excellent condition - Czech origin from the Art Deco era - purchased from a Czech antique dealer JHB in Prague in 1995
Stand dimensions: 36.5 cm x 16.5 cm x 5.5 cm
Inkstands (crystal) dimensions: 6.5 cm x 6.5 cm x 5 cm (excluding caps)
Blotter holder dimensions: 13 x 7 x 3.5 cm (excluding handle)
