* Albert Field, The Official Catalog of the Graphic Works of Salvador Dalí, pages 189–200.

Description:

Extraordinary surrealist composition by Salvador Dalí, belonging to his monumental graphic interpretation of The Divine Comedy, one of the artist’s most important and recognized editorial achievements.

The work represents the famous Forest of the Suicides, described by Dante in Inferno, canto XIII, located in the seventh circle, where the souls who took their own lives appear transformed into twisted and tormented trees.

Dalí develops a composition of extraordinary expressive intensity, in which the trunks acquire human forms, the branches become limbs and nature seems to come alive. The sinuous vegetal figures and the delicate combination of greens, ochres and grays skillfully reflect the master’s dreamlike universe.

The image constitutes one of the most representative interpretations of Dalí’s ability to transform the symbolism of classical literature into images of powerful psychological and surrealist content.

The work is part of the monumental project carried out between 1959 and 1963, for which approximately 3,500 wooden matrices were prepared for the hundred illustrations of The Divine Comedy.

Copy on Japanese paper, with wide margins and no visible watermarks, preserving the chromatic delicacy and richness of detail of this renowned composition.

A standout graphic work by Salvador Dalí, cataloged and of special interest to collectors of surrealism, bibliophiles and original 20th‑century graphic art.
Provenance: collection linked to Enrique Sabater
