Description from the seller
Willem Grimm (1904–1986)
"Rummelpott," ca. 1965.
Woodcut on Arches paper.
Hand-signed by the artist.
50.3 x 65.6 cm.
Excellent condition.
Grimm belonged to the "second generation" of German Expressionists—a group of artists who matured during the 1920s and 1930s, and whose work is often associated with the Hamburg Secession or the so-called "Lost Generation" (artists whose careers were cut short or who faced persecution under the Nazi regime). He is particularly noted for his landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, as well as for his depictions of traditional customs and folklore from Northern Germany—such as the *Rummelpott* (a New Year’s tradition involving singing and costumes)—and the carnivals of Basel.
