Two-panel folding screen depicting a bamboo grove, from the late Meiji to Taishō period, in the Shijō school style and attributed to Maekawa Bunrei (not by his hand), made of paper with a lacquered wood frame and gold leaf, 170.4 cm high and 188.2 cm wide, in excellent condition, with a certificate of authenticity included.
Description from the seller
A two-panel folding screen 屏風 (byôbu) depicting a grove of bamboo in the style of the Shijô school. Tall, deep-green stalks stand closely together, while younger shoots and sprays of leaves soften the composition. The open gold ground has developed an attractive patina.
Executed in ink and colour on gold leaf and set within a black lacquered frame. With attributive signature and seal: “Bunrei” 文嶺 in lower right corner. This is an attributive signature paying homage to the celebrated artist Maekawa Bunrei, not an original work by his hand.
Dimensions:
Height 170.4 cm, Total width: 188.2 cm (2 x 94.1 cm).
Period: Japan - late Meiji to Taishô period (early 20th century).
In very good restored condition, with patina and wear consistent with age on both sides, including some marks to the gold ground and minor wear to the frame. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
