Description from the seller

Rare Comoy's 'Grand Slam' Bulldog pipe (model 'Squat Bulldog') from the 1940s – UK Patent 405703

A fine, early Comoy's Grand Slam Bulldog pipe from the 1940s.
The information below comes from an advertisement for a similar pipe.

The Grand Slam was a fantastic product from Comoy's and is by many considered one of their best smoking pipes ever. Early examples, such as this beautiful model with patent numbers, are comparable to Dunhill pipes and are even regarded as superior to later models. The patent number refers to the unique construction of the stem (tenon): it is provided with a metal 'stinger' element that extends almost to the combustion chamber and is equipped with rubber rings (gaskets) in various sizes, indicated by the number on the shaft (on this particular pipe that is an '*6'). These rings force the smoke through small holes in the stinger, which in some ways recalls the Kaywoodie system. It was an attempt to create a dry smoking experience. Although I normally regard stingers as unnecessary ballast that you’re better off discarding, I have heard from others that some systems – such as this Grand Slam patent – do indeed work as intended! Moreover, these rubber rings were readily available loose and replaceable; they wore down over time, but did contribute to a snug fit in the shank, which on these models was drilled more loosely. Finally: because the stinger with its large ring blocked the passage somewhat, the chamber in the boiler was deliberately enlarged to ensure airflow. This pipe was probably manufactured in the late 1940s, carries the British patent number 405703 and has the classic 'Squat Saddle Bulldog' shape (model 398; on this pipe only '8' is visible, perhaps the '39' has worn away). A truly English design! The pipe features a perfectly formed, wide bowl with a double bead, thick walls and a roomy tobacco chamber.

Inscription/markings: COMOY'S GRAND SLAM PATENT, MADE IN LONDON ENGLAND, U.K. PATENT 405703, 8, *6

The pipe is also marked with 'Leiden'; I suspect that 'Wassenburg' is the owner's name.

Dimensions (approx.): 14 cm long, 3.8 cm high, 2 cm width of the chamber, 3 cm depth of the chamber

Condition: Good.
Weight: (approx.) 35 g

See photos – these are an important part of the description.
