Description
Gestural abstract composition by René Mels, created in the 1960s-1970s.

An explosion of colored strokes occupies the center and the right side of the sheet: blue, yellow, red, green and black hatchings that cross and interlace in a dynamic movement.

The strokes are rapid, nervous, almost calligraphic. The white paper remains largely visible on the left and top, which gives air and rhythm to the whole and brings out the liveliness of the colors.

The gesture is free and joyful: the pencil structures the movement with tight lines and denser accents, while the overlays create points of chromatic tension.

You can sense Mels’ freedom of writing in his lyrical abstract period, between spontaneity of the stroke and balance of the composition.
A living, colorful and decorative work, typical of the artist’s gestural maturity.

Biography
René Mels (René Meulemans, 1909-1977) was trained at the Leuven and Brussels Academies, then at La Cambre. After an expressionist start influenced by Permeke, he moved toward abstraction as early as 1947.

Active member of Young Belgian Painting (exhibitions 1947-1948 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels), he joined the Abstract Art group in 1952 and co-founded Cap d’encre in 1963.

His work is characterized by a concern for construction, flexibility of writing and expressive chromaticism. In 1950, a state grant enabled him to work at Atelier 17 of Stanley William Hayter in Paris.

His watercolors, engravings, pastels and paintings are in numerous public Belgian and international collections, notably at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
