The work is conceived as a vertical diptych composed of two autonomous canvases, physically separate but unified within a single frame. In the upper part is depicted David Bowie, captured in a striking close-up; below appears Pablo Picasso, represented in advanced age with his hand raised beside his face.
The choice of the two protagonists establishes a suggestive comparison between figures belonging to different disciplines and generations but united by a radical ability to transform the artistic language of their time: Picasso in the realm of the figurative arts, Bowie through music, performance and the construction of image.
The painting uses a language with a pronounced expressionist matrix. The flesh tones abandon natural color for a range dominated by blues, grays, azure and purples, interspersed with pinkish and ochre accents. The brushwork remains deliberately evident and fragmented, while the likeness is accentuated especially through the eyes, a central psychological element of both canvases.
Very interesting is the oblique division determined by the juxtaposition of the two canvases: it is not hidden, but becomes a compositional element and seems to physically connect the two portraits. Bowie represents modernity, metamorphosis and the construction of identity; Picasso embodies creative force, experimentation and the long experience of the master.
Condition Report: Works showing signs of time and flaws consistent with the period
