A 19th‑century Japanese lacquered wood vanity box (kyôdai) complete with hand mirror, in excellent condition, measuring 72 cm high, 27.5 cm wide and 27.8 cm deep, with gilt metal mounts and gold hiramaki-e decoration, originally attributed and authentic, with a certificate of authenticity included when shipped.
Description from the seller
An elegant black-lacquered Japanese dressing stand 鏡台 (kyôdai), richly decorated in gold hiramaki-e 平蒔絵. Its surfaces are scattered with circular, crest-like designs depicting cranes, butterflies, bamboo, pine, plum and other motifs.
This type of high quality cosmetic set is known to be used by the aristocracy.
The square cabinet rests on low feet and contains two drawers with engraved metal ring pulls. Above it, a pair of slender uprights holds a hand mirror 柄鏡 (e-kagami) between scrolling supports. The mirror is accompanied by a round lacquered mirror box 鏡箱 (kagami-bako). An oblong lidded accessory box, decorated with peonies and scrolling foliage, completes the ensemble.
Considering its age, the set is in very good condition, with some wear along the edges and some losses to the lacquer. Please examine the photographs for a clear condition reference.
