Description from the seller
Original Hand-Painted Publicity Animation Cel — Four-Character Portrait with Multicoloured Title
The Beatles Animated Television Series | King Features Syndicate | Character designs by Peter Sander | 1965–1967 series production | Dutch Capitol Theater provenance
An exceptionally appealing piece of Beatles animation artwork, presenting John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr together beneath the brilliantly coloured title of their celebrated 1960s animated television series.
The four musicians are portrayed in the unmistakable cartoon style developed during the height of Beatlemania. Their distinctive mop-top hairstyles, expressive facial features, elongated figures and sharply outlined blue costumes reflect the graphic simplicity and playful characterisation that defined the original programme.
Above the figures, THE BEATLES appears in large, individually coloured lettering, lending the composition the appearance of a specially conceived promotional illustration rather than an ordinary sequential animation frame.
The artwork and its artistic origins
The Beatles animated television series premiered on ABC in the United States on 25 September 1965. Produced for King Features Syndicate under Al Brodax, it was a pioneering adaptation of the identities of contemporary recording artists into a weekly animated programme.
British animator and designer Peter Sander was responsible for creating the original animated likenesses of the four Beatles. His character model sheets established their individual appearances and mannerisms, providing the visual foundation for the international animation teams involved in producing the series.
The production extended beyond Britain and included Cinecentrum in the Netherlands, making the series a noteworthy international collaboration in the history of television animation.
A total of 39 episodes were produced between 1965 and 1967, with broadcasts and repeats continuing through 1969.
A distinctive publicity composition
The present work is particularly notable for its complete four-character arrangement and the integration of the programme title directly into the composition.
Traditional publicity cels were created as carefully composed illustrations for the promotion or presentation of animated productions. Unlike individual production frames, they could bring several characters together in an arrangement designed to convey the identity and visual appeal of a programme in a single image.
The confident outlines, carefully separated colours and balanced grouping give this artwork considerable visual presence.
Dutch provenance — Capitol Theater
The artwork forms part of a small collection of four hand-painted Beatles model/publicity cels preserved with Dutch provenance material.
The collection includes the handwritten identification "Publicity Cel" and the Dutch ownership stamp "EIGENDOM CAPITOL THEATER", translating to "Property of Capitol Theater".
This association provides an unusual connection between the Beatles animated series and Dutch cinema history. The precise circumstances of the theatre’s ownership and the original use of the artworks remain undocumented.
