Description from the seller
Hand-Painted Publicity Animation Cel — Four Beatles with Vertical Polychrome Lettering
King Features Syndicate | The Beatles Television Cartoons | Original character designs by Peter Sander | Dutch Capitol Theater provenance
A wonderfully distinctive Beatles animation artwork, depicting the four members of the group in a full-length portrait accompanied by a vertical arrangement of brightly coloured lettering spelling THE BEATLES.
The composition captures the individuality of the cartoon characters through their exaggerated expressions, sharply defined mop-top hairstyles and contrasting outfits in turquoise, blue and reddish brown.
Particularly charming is the varied portrayal of the four musicians: from the folded arms and composed expression of the first figure to the more animated gestures and humorous facial characteristics of his companions.
The result is a lively and immediately recognisable representation of the Fab Four, conceived in the visual vocabulary of their original animated television appearances.
Peter Sander and the animated Beatles
The origins of the Beatles television cartoons can be traced to producer Al Brodax, who developed the series for King Features Syndicate during the unprecedented international success of Beatlemania.
When the programme premiered on American television in September 1965, it introduced a new interpretation of the group, transforming the musicians into stylised cartoon personalities.
The original character designs were developed by British artist Peter Sander, who established the distinctive proportions, costumes and expressions of the animated Beatles.
His drawings served as model references for animation studios working on the series in several countries, including the Netherlands, where Cinecentrum contributed to production.
The series subsequently reached Dutch television through AVRO, beginning in May 1966.
The importance of the composition
Unlike a conventional animation frame, this artwork presents the complete group in an independent, carefully structured portrait.
The vertical lettering is especially noteworthy. Rather than placing the programme title above the characters, it becomes a prominent graphic element alongside them, balancing the elongated figures and giving the image a strong publicity-oriented appearance.
Such arrangements were characteristic of animation promotional artwork, where the identity of the programme and its principal characters needed to be communicated immediately.
The vivid colours and minimal background also allow the individual character designs to remain the principal focus.
Dutch collection history
The work originates from a group of four Beatles model/publicity animation artworks associated with an original Dutch ownership marking reading:
EIGENDOM CAPITOL THEATER
The wording translates as “Property of Capitol Theater”.
Together with the handwritten identification “Publicity Cel” preserved in the collection documentation, the inscription provides a fascinating indication of the artworks’ historical connection to the Dutch entertainment and cinema world.
Although the specific Capitol Theater and the circumstances of the original ownership have not been conclusively established, the marking forms an important element of the collection’s provenance.
