Description from the seller

Rarity!

A masterfully hand-crafted large Vienna meerschaum pipe, including original case!
Pipe dimensions: length about 15 cm, width about 3.5 cm, height about 7 cm.
In excellent condition – origin before 1912 Austria.
Exported to Great Britain.
Antique meerschaum pipes from this era were often imported from Austria or Turkey and fitted in England by local silversmiths with high-quality silver bands or caps. These pieces were subsequently sent to Chester for official inspection.

Finishing in Great Britain by silversmith in Chester, 1912.

• The head material: The artistically carved middle section is made of meerschaum (sepionith). This soft mineral was extremely popular for pipes around 1900 because it takes carving beautifully and, during smoking, develops a honey- to chestnut-brown patina due to the nicotine. The darker coloration on the pipe head clearly shows that the piece was used earlier.
• The carving: The motif shows a finely detailed horse motif. (Hunting, nature, and animal motifs—especially horses, dogs, or deer—were the classic status symbols on meerschaum pipes of this era).
• The silver mount: The silver middle piece (shank ring) connects the meerschaum head to the mouthpiece. The hallmarks officially show that this silver fitting was tested and certified in 1912 in Chester (England).

The three vertically arranged stamps can now be precisely determined (top to bottom):
1. The town mark (top): The Chester coat of arms (three wheaten ears and a sword). The shield bears the characteristic curved, three-pointed top used for the era.
2. The year letter (middle): A clear, small “m” in a shield cartouche. In the official hallmark table of the Chester assay office, this exact font and shield form stands for the manufacturing year 1912.
3. The fineness symbol (bottom): The “Lion Passant” (roaring lion) as the legal guarantee of genuine sterling silver (925 fineness).
To the right of the vertical sequence you can also see remnants of an engraving or maker’s mark on the metal. Since the object dates from 1912,

• The mouthpiece: The yellow-mottled tip is made of amber.
In sum, you are looking at a beautiful, over-110-year-old collectible of Edwardian tobacco culture, whose age is unequivocally proven by the British silver stamps.
Includes the original leather case lined with velvet and satin.

Please note the many and highly detailed photos!
Case dimensions: roughly 18 x 8 x 4 cm.
Pipe dimensions: roughly 15 x 7 x 3 cm
