Description from the seller
Erich Gruner (1881–1966).
"Krieg" (War).
Original portfolio containing 14 (out of 15) original etchings, each hand-signed by the Expressionist artist from Leipzig.
Seemann, Leipzig, 1917.
Etchings on Japan paper, all mounted within their original mats. Each etching bears an embossed number. Etching number 1 is missing. Original linen portfolio. 40 x 31 cm.
One of 100 signed and numbered copies. A magnificent specimen; the covers show minimal wear, the portfolio flaps are slightly torn, while the etchings and mats are in excellent condition.
Very rare and difficult to acquire.
This is an impressive series by the artist, who served as a soldier in the First World War between 1914 and 1916. He was wounded twice—an experience that profoundly shaped his perspective on the conflict and his subsequent artistic output. These images are as explicit and striking as they are melancholic; devoid of any heroic glorification, they unflinchingly depict the horrors and brutality of war, with titles such as "Russian Atrocities," "Cruel Awakening," "The Hanged," "The Homeless," "Shelter in Flames," and "Direct Hit"...
An advertisement from the publisher, dating from the year of publication (September 1917), promotes the work as the artist’s "masterpiece" [Der Kunstmarkt. Wochenschrift für Kenner und Sammler, Issue 43, XIV].
Gruner studied at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of Jean-Paul Laurens.
