Juan Ugalde is a renowned Spanish figurative painter, known for his mixed-media works that fuse painting and photography. From 1992 he began using photography as the basis for his works, which he then intervened with painting and collage. His work has reflected themes such as unbridled urban development, pollution, life in shanties, and speculative urban development in the context of globalization, combining elements of social critique with others that are humorous and ironic.
