Description
Rare Xerox work - hand-signed by Beuys.
Originator / Publisher of the poster: The poster was designed and issued by Beuys’ publisher Klaus Staeck (Edition Staeck).
Photograph on the poster: The halftone reproduced image in the center shows Joseph Beuys at his famous performance “Boxkampf für direkte Demokratie” at documenta 5 in Kassel (8 October 1972).
One of the very rare shots of Beuys “without a hat.”
The photo itself comes from photographer Hans Albrecht Lusznat.
Political context: Beuys ran in the 1976 federal election as an independent top candidate for the AUD (Aktionsgemeinschaft Unabhängiger Deutscher) in North Rhine-Westphalia (electoral district Düsseldorf I). The AUD was one of the predecessor organizations of the later party “The Greens.” This refers to his political art of the early 1970s.
Licensed release. Beuys acquired the rights to the image and modified the colors within his well-known Xerox series (the images were enlarged and printed by photocopying).
The works were colorfully altered – here toward gray. The Xerox works were created exclusively in the mid-1970s and are regarded as an independent body of work with a very small, previously unknown edition.
HAND-SIGNED by Beuys with black ink.
Delivery with frame – as shown.
Condition: mint – on the reverse, minimal adhesive traces; signature flawless.
