After his experiments with Cubism, Piet Mondrian developed his own style in 1920, which he called 'neoplasticism'. The aesthetic goal of this style was a composition based on contrasts, meaning that paintings often contain both vertical and horizontal lines and tones, alongside primary colors.

Before he painted 'Composition Mondrian Red Black Yellow Blue and Grey', Mondrian worked with chessboard patterns, which created a greater variation of rectangle sizes and different grays in this artwork.
