Description from the seller

Lot of 8 antique amadou lighters – including 1 Flamidor Ouragan lighter – Woven wicks – 1920s-1950s

Beautiful set of 8 antique amadou lighters for collection, dating likely to the first half of the 20th century, mainly 1920s to 1950s.

These lighters show a great diversity of shapes, mechanisms and metal finishes, accompanied by long woven textile wicks in varied colors.

Their manufacture testifies to the ingenuity of old smoking accessories, using a wheel-and-flint ignition system to produce sparks intended to superficially light or redden an amadou wick.

The set notably includes a French lighter brand Flamidor, model Ouragan, identifiable thanks to its original marking.

Description of the 8 models

1. Silver amadou lighter – Red and yellow wick
Cylindrical metal lighter in silver with decorative rings and a side wheel ignition mechanism.
It retains a red and yellow woven wick, with a slightly frayed end.

2. Silver amadou lighter – Wood tip
Original cylindrical model with a silver finish, featuring a natural wood rounded tip.
It has a side wheel mechanism and a beige and red woven wick.
The combination of metal and wood gives it a particularly original appearance.

3. Gold-toned amadou lighter – Grooved decoration
Cylindrical model probably brass, featuring several grooved rings and a side ignition mechanism.
It retains its red and beige textile wick, whose end has an old protective coating.

4. Silver amadou lighter – Long bi-color wick
Cylindrical silver metal model, adorned with several decorative rings.
It has a side wheel mechanism and a long beige and red woven wick, ending in a few dark threads.

5. Inclined silver amadou lighter – Red and yellow Wick
Old model with a slightly inclined metal body, with decorative rings and a side ignition mechanism.
It is accompanied by a long woven wick in red and yellow.

6. Small-format amadou lighter – Orange wick
Elegant cylindrical model in silvered metal, equipped with a side wheel mechanism.
It features a long orange textile wick, finished with a decorative knot.

7. Metal amadou lighter – Green and yellow wick (FLAMIDOR OURAGAN)
Old tubular model with a patinated metal finish, possessing a side ignition mechanism.
It retains a long woven wick in green and yellow tones, finished with a knot.

8. Silver amadou lighter – Large orange woven wick
Cylindrical model with a silvered metal finish, decorative rings and a side wheel mechanism.
It stands out with its substantial, very long and thick orange textile wick, with dark threads woven in.
Brand and origin

One of the lighters bears the marking “FLAMIDOR – OURAGAN,” corresponding to an old French-made model.

The other models do not show a formally identified brand on the available photographs.

Estimation of period: 1920-1950.

Overall condition and conservation

The eight lighters are well preserved for their age.
They display a beautiful natural patina, with some scratches, oxidation traces and wear marks consistent with their age.
The old textile wicks are present and retain their various colors and woven patterns. Some ends show fraying and wear.
The mechanisms and their components are preserved.
This set constitutes a varied and original collection, particularly interesting for enthusiasts of antique lighters, smoking accessories and early 20th-century objects.
The removable mechanical elements are present and photographed separately

The lighters have been kept without fuel and without a flint, to limit the risk of degradation during storage. Plan to place a flint and fill before first use.
