A Meiji period six-panel byobu folding screen on a silver-leaf ground, depicting a landscape with flowering plants and birds, measuring 172 cm high by 367 cm wide and 2 cm deep, in good condition with restorations to the hinges and wear to the borders, accompanied by an original certificate of authenticity from Mastromauro Japanese art gallery.
Description from the seller
A Japanese six-panel folding screen painted on a silver-leaf ground with an aged patina, depicting a landscape with flowering plants and small birds.
The composition extends across the lower section of the screen, where a stream winds through a rocky garden with white irises, flowering shrubs and wild grasses. At the centre a small blue-plumaged bird perched on one of its branches and another depicted in flight.
To the right, yellow flowers and delicate touches of blue complete the vegetation. The expansive silver-leaf ground, displaying a warm golden patina, enhances the delicacy of the painting and the rhythm of the composition.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
--- The byobu is in good condition with damage and restorations to the paper throughout. A stain on the fifth panel. Restored hinges between panels 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6. Wear to the silk borders, with minor losses. Restorations to the paper on the reverse. Wear to the lacquered frame. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
